ABOUT US -A BRIEF HISTORY
"The Mainstone".......the heart of the community

As the Mainstone estate expanded, two residents spoke about starting a day nursery but no premises were available.

On 22nd September 1975 a meeting was held and a committee formed to start the Mainstone Play Group and Community Association
With a committee in place the then derelict Mainstone Farm was suggested as a site and with help from many the land was cleared and the access road from Pattinson Drive created. Serious fund raising followed .... Consisting of raffles, jumble sales, BBQs, coffee mornings, and donations from various businesses. In the first year, a wooden hut was purchased and erected for £216 but the building was badly vandalised and was subsequently sold.

In 1981 another building was purchased from Dulwich hospital at a cost of £3250. Volunteers from the community laid the foundations and erected the building. The 'Social Club' was born and opened Friday's through to Sunday.

In 1987/88 the original building needed replacement so fund raising and loans funded this and in 1995/96 the new building was completed and inaugurated by David Jamison MP.

In 1998 Construction began on an extension using funds from a national lottery grant. Our infrastructure was then complete and we are now some 28 years on from those early days of Mainstone Farm clearance.
